Case Study: Digital Modernization Toolkit

Overview

A user‑friendly toolkit designed to guide teams through the transition from legacy SharePoint and InfoPath experiences to modern SharePoint Online and Power Apps.

This toolkit brings clarity to modernization by combining UX guidance, technical pathways, and practical resources. It reflects my approach to simplifying complexity, enabling users, and designing systems that support long‑term adoption.

The Problem

Many teams were still relying on legacy SharePoint features and InfoPath forms, creating friction for both users and maintainers. Common challenges included:

  • Outdated UX patterns that no longer met user expectations

  • Confusion around what modern SharePoint can do

  • Uncertainty about when to use JSON formatting vs Power Apps

  • Lack of a clear starting point for modernization

  • Inconsistent user journeys across sites and forms

The result was hesitation, rework, and a tendency to replicate old patterns instead of embracing modern capabilities.

The Solution: Migration Toolkit

To support teams through modernization, I created a toolkit that breaks the process into clear, approachable components. Each piece is designed to reduce overwhelm and guide decision‑making.

Toolkit Components:

  • Migration Checklist

  • What’s New in Web Parts

  • Modernizing UX: InfoPath → Power Apps

  • User Journey Snapshot: Current → Future State

  • This or That: JSON Form Formatting vs Power Apps

Together, these resources form a cohesive enablement experience.

Migration Checklist

A step‑by‑step guide that helps teams understand where they are, what they need, and how to begin.

Value: Creates consistency, reduces uncertainty, and gives teams a clear path forward.

What’s New in Web Parts

A visual overview of modern web parts and their capabilities.

Value: Helps users shift from “replicate what we had” to “imagine what’s possible.”

Modernizing UX: InfoPath → Power Apps

A side‑by‑side comparison of legacy InfoPath forms and modern Power Apps experiences.

Value: Demonstrates how modernization improves usability, accessibility, and maintainability — and shows my hybrid skillset in UX + Power Platform.

User Journey Snapshot: Current → Future State

A simple, visual journey map showing how the user experience evolves through modernization.

Value: Helps stakeholders understand the impact beyond the technical upgrade — focusing on clarity, flow, and user needs.

This or That: JSON Form Formatting vs Power Apps

A quick decision guide that clarifies when to use JSON formatting and when a Power App is the better fit.

Value: Reduces confusion, speeds up decision‑making, and prevents over‑engineering.
